Latin America’s steel industry under scrutiny

Alacero-55, the annual conference of the Latin American steel industry, takes place in Mexico City between 9-11 November. The event traditionally attracts some of the most influential people from the industry who meet to discuss the external and regional difficulties facing the industry today.

According to the organizer, Alacero-55 ‘will focus on the importance of ensuring a ‘level playing field’ that allows the Latin American industry to compete according to the guidelines of the WTO and to return to the path of industrialisation that leads to sustainable development’.

The conference will examine the role of innovation and new technologies and how steel can ‘continue to provide solutions for a better life’.

Among the speakers at this year’s event are Aryam Vasquez, senior economist for Latin America at Oxford Economics who will discuss the global economic situation and structural changes affecting the markets and the Latin America region.

Chinese economy specialists plan to evaluate the effects of China’s current economic reforms and their impact on Latin America.

Dr. Edwin Basson, director-general of worldsteel , Nick Sowar, leader of metals sector at Deloitte, and Haiyan Wang, managing partner of the China-India Institute will discuss the overall outlook for the steel industry.
